Metters
Industries Awarded Contract to Support the US Navy Marine Mammal
Program
Orlando, FL - August 31, 2005 - Metters
Manufacturing (Orlando, FL), the simulation and modeling division of
Metters Industries (McLean, VA), was awarded a 5-year fixed price
IDIQ contract from the United States Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare
Systems Command
(SPAWARSYSCOM) that is located in San Diego,
California. The contract is for the development and manufacture of
training sea mines for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. SPAWARSYSCOM
is the Navy’s premier Command, Control, Communications, and
Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR)
command for acquisition and life-cycle management of communications
and warfare systems.
The
U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program is dedicated to studying, training,
and deploying marine mammals for the detection and retrieval of
underwater objects, as well as their use for maritime security. The
biological sonar of dolphins (echolocation) is uniquely effective at
locating sea mines so they can be avoided or removed. It has been
found that the echolocation abilities of dolphins are precise enough
to penetrate the shell of mines and “see” the inner workings.
Because of this, the training mines Metters Manufacturing will be
developing must not only mimic an actual mine’s external
characteristics, but the interior must also resemble a live mine and
be rugged enough for repeated transportation and deployment.
Founded in 1981, Metters Industries, Inc. is a leading research,
engineering, and services company that provides innovative support
services to many government agencies and commercial customers.
Metters serves customers across the United States in the areas of
information technology, engineering and technical services, and
custom manufacturing. |
